10 Things you'll become addicted to after travelling in Colombia

One of the hardest things to do after a big trip is to get over the nostalgia you feel after that great travel buzz. I’ve had so much fun travelling to Colombia over the years but there are things that I definitely miss and have become addicted to after returning home (hello, arepas!). But it’s not just the food that I love and miss about the country, here are some other things that I became addicted to after travelling to Colombia.

1. Socialising on horseback

There have been so many social get-togethers that included a ride on a horse. Rather than sitting in a cafe and having a chat, or going out for a bite to eat, we go for a ride into the countryside. I am incredibly uncomfortable on the back of the horse, so it didn’t necessarily make for a relaxing time, but it was a lot of fun and something that you’re likely to miss.

2. Big breakfasts

It’s all about the breakfasts in Colombia! A piece of buttered toast and a cup of tea will never be the same. If you had this for breakfast, people would likely ask you if you’re ok, not feeling well or on a diet. Breakfast in Colombia can include anything from arepas and cheese to beans and shredded beef. And there’s also a hot drink or a juice to be had, too.

3. Facial expressions

I’ve written about this before, but I just love how Colombians use their face to communicate different things. They point with their lips, for example, which seems lazy but it’s really just a more efficient form of communication, if you ask me!

4. The coffee

Colombia is one of the largest coffee producers in the world, and while it’s said that a lot of the good stuff is actually exported, that doesn’t mean you can’t get great coffee in Colombia, too. You absolutely can! Coffee is such a big part of Colombia’s cultural history and identity and a start to the morning just wouldn’t be complete without a tintico.

5. Landscapes like this one

This one is self explanatory, really. How could you not become addicted to seeing views like this while travelling in Colombia?

6. The incredible variety of fruit

The tropical climate in much of Colombia means there is an incredible variety of fruit available. From several different varieties of banana to spiky fruits that you’ve probably never seen before. Just try to sample them all, I dare you! You won’t be disappointed.

7. The friendly locals

It’s true, Colombians are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet and you’ll miss them like crazy when you return.

8. The patriotism

If you’ve spent any time living or travelling in Colombia then you’ve probably watched a football game and have a tricolor football jersey to prove it. The patriotism is contagious and you’re sure to become addicted to cheering on your new favourite team while you’re there.

9. The history

Colombia has a really interesting ancient and modern history, and it’s really worth learning about while you’re exploring the country. You can do that by visiting museums and galleries, but a lot of the history is communicated through street art, too. Ask questions and get curious because it’s fascinating and you’ll want to learn more.

10. Food comas galore!

With all those big meals, carbs, coffee, hot chocolates, cheese and arepas, you’ll never want to leave, or you’ll at least want to recreate your favourite dishes once you get home.
